The coziest little bookshop in the prettiest village in Maine.
What could be better than the smell of a leather wingback, the heft of a good strong narrative, the sound of pages flipping one to the next?
Welcome to Fiction Bookshop where we invite you to browse at your leisure and have a seat on our vintage sofa. If there is a lull at the till, we will happily pour you a cup of tea while you wander round. Come chat with us about the books you love and we will do our best to help uncover your next favorite read. We can also suggest the perfect gift for the book lovers in your life.
Independent bookshops are born of passion ~ for words, for stories, for the exchange of ideas ~ and we love the lot of them in all their eccentric, wild and wondrous iterations! We imagine you have many favorites…we hope Fiction will be one of them.
Water Street in the early 1900’s.

Throwback to the 1950’s when we were a hardware store.
Meet the proprietor
Toni Chappell, Fiction’s founder, made her first ever purchase secretly at the age of six by calling a number she saw on the TV: it was a set of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts books. They were to be paid for COD (do they even do that anymore?). Her parents, tight on money but impressed by her audacity, paid the invoice. Books have been a singular passion ever since, one she passed on to Fiction’s not-so-silent partners (her daughters, Indi and Alex) who are avid readers, writers, and key consultants when it comes to everything you’ll find in the bookshop.
Visit us in our historic 18th-century chandlery, a place where sailors stocked up on supplies like candles to illuminate long nights at sea. That’s books too, right? Brimming with ideas to light up the dark.
